He continues to serve as Adjunct Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Michigan State University – College of Human Medicine. Vitaliy enjoys working with adults, adolescents, and couples in helping them pursue physical, emotional, relational, and spiritual wholeness. In his work with individual clients, Dr. Voytenko primarily uses relational psychodynamic psychotherapy—an effective contemporary therapeutic approach rooted in the psychoanalytic tradition. The term psychodynamic reflects an appreciation for the complexity of the human mind and the fact that there are “dynamics” outside our immediate awareness that impact our feelings and behaviors. The word relational in this context highlights the critical importance of an authentic client-therapist relationship in the process of healing. This type of psychotherapy cannot be done through treatment manuals, self-help books, or computerized video-therapy. It is both a science and an art and requires extensive training and supervised experience for the therapist. From the client’s standpoint, psychodynamic therapy usually requires a more substantial time commitment than the short-term, manualized treatments favored by managed care companies. In return, it typically provides a more complete and lasting cure by increasing the client’s internal capacity to deal with stressors in the future.
